Biosphere reserve Großes Walsertal

Life & holidays in harmony with nature

The biosphere reserve Großes Walsertal is situated in the centre of Voralberg, in the westernmost part of Austria. Around 3,500 inhabitants live in the six communities Thuringerberg, St. Gerold, Blons, Sonntag-Buchboden, Fontanella-Faschina and Raggal-Marul. The valley is known for its impressive nature and the practised Walser culture.

A holiday in the Großes Walsertal biosphere reserve means finding time for yourself with the unique and individual Walser people. Discover the exceptional natural jewels of the valley free from the daily grind: its alpine gardens and flower meadows, lakes, rivers and high alpine peaks, its culinary specialities and welcoming hosts. Just let go and find your own inner self.

As a UNESCO biosphere reserve, it boasts a varied mountain landscape with gorges, torrents, colourful alpine meadows, 230 km of marked hiking trails, 40 mountain peaks and 47 alpine farms. Hikes in the core zones of the biosphere reserve, such as the Gadental, the Hochmoor Tiefenwald or the Faludriga Nova area are only a few of the highlights during your stay in the Großes Walsertal. The alpine and hiking area Sonntag-Stein also has its individual charm and is easily accessible by cable car.

The biosphere reserve Großes Walsertal is almost an insider tip in winter. Off the beaten track, yet in the centre of Voralberg, the mountainscape is transformed into a winter wonderland. The familiar sky areas Faschina, Raggal and Sonntag-Stein attract mainly families and leisure skiers. In silence and tranquillity, you can enjoy the winter landscape on numerous hiking trails, snow shoe routes, ski tours and cross-country skiing tracks. Guided snow shoe hikes, visits to the alpine dairies and cultural events round off the winter at the Great Walser Valley biosphere reserve.
